MICHAEL PUICAN
Senior Project Director
Michael Puican has been creating successful marketing and branding strategies for more than 20 years. Michael obtained a solid foundation from top-notch, for-profit companies such as PepsiCo and Alberto Culver, where he was Vice President of Marketing. In 2005, Michael decided to pursue his passion, which is helping mission-based, nonprofit organizations.
Michael's expertise is utilizing audience insights to build high-impact branding and marketing strategies. He believes strongly that getting to know an audience's attitudes and interests assures that an organization's strategies are on target. This is done through primary research such as one-on-one interviews, focus groups and quantitative surveys.
As a skilled interviewer, focus group leader and designer of surveys, he has utilized this approach to significantly improve the efforts of a number of nonprofits. For example:
Through one-on-one interviews with high-capacity, non-donating alumni of North Park University, he developed a strategy to significantly improve alumni giving.
He developed a new advertising message using focus groups of current and potential students that significantly increased applications to National Teachers and Educators College.
He led a complete repositioning of Central States SER that was guided by interviews of clients, board members, donors and foundations.
He led focus groups of citizens for the City of Evanston Climate Action Plan to uncover effective appeals to encourage citizens to reduce carbon emissions.
Through interviews, focus groups and town meetings, Michael is developing a major improvement to the structure of early childhood programs for Oak Park, IL.
Michael holds a BS in Communications from Northwestern University. He has taken graduate business studies at the University of Chicago and the University of Michigan. He also has earned a graduate certificate in fundraising from the Alexson Center at North Park University.
He is chairman of the board of the Guild Complex, a vibrant literary arts organization in Chicago. In addition to all of this, Michael is a published poet.
